Tips for Caring for Handmade Furniture So It Lasts a Lifetime

One of the best things about handmade furniture is it’s built to last. It is crafted and finished with longevity in mind. However, even the highest-quality handmade furniture needs the right care to stay looking its best for years to come.

At DK Fabrications, we put a huge amount of time and skill into every piece we make. Each item is handcrafted to suit your space, your lifestyle and your taste. With a bit of simple care, your handmade furniture can last a lifetime and often longer.Ā

In this guide, we share our advice on how to look after handcrafted furniture properly, based on our experience in metalwork and joinery.

Why Handmade Furniture Needs Proper Care

Our handmade furniture is always made from quality materials. Solid wood, steel and carefully chosen finishes behave differently to flat-pack or veneered furniture. They age naturally, which is part of their appeal, but they also respond to particular factors in an environmentĀ

Changes in temperature, moisture and cleaning habits all play a role in how your furniture looks over time. Caring for them properly does not mean constant maintenance or specialist products. In most cases, it is about understanding the materials and treating them with a bit of respect.

Caring for Solid Wood Furniture

Regular Cleaning

For everyday cleaning, a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all you need. Dust can act like fine sandpaper over time, so regular wiping helps protect the surface. Avoid using harsh sprays or silicone-based cleaners, as these can build up and dull the finish.

If you do need a cleaner, use one specifically designed for solid wood and apply it sparingly.

Protecting Pieces from Heat and Moisture

Wood is a natural material and reacts to changes in temperature and humidity. Try to avoid placing handmade wooden furniture directly next to radiators, log burners or large windows with strong sunlight.

Always use coasters, placemats and trivets for hot mugs, plates and pans. Heat and moisture are the most common causes of marks on wooden surfaces, and these small habits make a big difference.

Oiling and Waxing

Depending on the finish used, your handmade furniture may benefit from occasional oiling or waxing. This helps nourish the wood and maintain its protective layer.

At DK Fabrications, we always advise customers on the specific finish used on their piece and how often it should be refreshed. As a general rule, once or twice a year is usually enough for most items in normal household use.

Looking After Metal Features and Frames

Many of our handmade furniture pieces combine wood with steel or metalwork. Metal is extremely durable, but it still benefits from basic care.

Cleaning Metal Surfaces

A soft cloth and warm, soapy water are usually enough to clean metal frames or details. Dry the surface afterwards to prevent water marks. Avoid abrasive pads or strong chemical cleaners, as these can damage the finish.

Preventing Scratches and Chips

Powder-coated or painted metal finishes are tough, but not indestructible. Be mindful when moving furniture or placing heavy objects against metal legs or frames. If a small chip does occur, it can often be touched up before rust becomes an issue.

If you are ever unsure, we are always happy to advise.

Everyday Use and Wear

One of the best things about handmade furniture is that it is made to be used. Small signs of wear over time are normal and often add character. That said, a few sensible habits will help your furniture age gracefully.

  • Lift items rather than dragging them across surfaces
  • Avoid standing or sitting on furniture not designed for weight
  • Use felt pads under decorative items if needed

In family homes, handmade furniture often sees a lot of use. We design our pieces with this in mind, using robust materials and solid construction, but sensible use always helps extend lifespan.

Seasonal Changes and Your Furniture

In the UK, seasonal changes can affect solid wood furniture. During colder months, central heating can dry the air; meanwhile, in summer the humidity can cause wood to expand slightly.

This is completely normal. Small movements, hairline gaps or changes in texture are part of how natural materials behave. Keeping your home well ventilated and avoiding extreme temperature swings will help keep everything stable.

Long-Term Maintenance and Repairs

Unlike mass-produced furniture, handmade furniture is built to last and to be maintained. Over time, you may wish to refresh a surface, re-oil a top, or update a finish.

At DK Fabrications, we always encourage customers to get in touch if they have questions years down the line. We know how each piece was built, and in many cases, we can help restore or update it rather than replacing it entirely.
